Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a 1949 stage musical starring Jane Russel, Marilyn Monroe and directed by Howard Hawks. It is a story about Dorothy Show (played by Russel ) and Lorelie Lee (played by Monroe) which are show girls and best friends. Lorelie is engaged to Gus Edmond who is willing to buy anything for her. In a scene, Jane Russell , who played opposite Monroe, sang "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" in court while pretending to be Lorelei. Diamonds are an element in another story line in the movie, in which Lorelei is given a diamond by the mine owner, in gratitude for her recovering the photographs.
The Gentlemen Prefer Blondes explores women's power and powerlessness in relationships and in society in general.
